The 1908 Southern Pacific train depot in Orange has been vacant for nearly 20 years. Orange City Council rejected a variance for Jeannie and Wyatt Bartling to turn the old depot into a restaurant that would serve liquor. The variance was required because the depot is 215 feet from West Orange-Stark Middle School. Superintendent O. Taylor Collins and two members of his school board protested allowing liquor to be served. The Capistrano bar, at the site for more than 60 years, can be seen in the background, across Green Avenue from the depot.

Emergency workers clean up the site of a Hamshire-Fannett school bus accident that involved three other cars. Authorities say the accident was a head on collision, but were unsure of the cause. The two teenage students on the bus were treated by EMS but refused transportation to the hospital. No major injuries were reported.

A beaver dam across a slough of Adams Bayou in Orange is creating a pond to the back. The Orange County Drainage District has an on-going problem with beavers building dams and blocking drainage paths. Michael Hoke, director of Shangri La Botanical Gardens and Nature Center, found this dam to the north of the nature center. He said a beaver can build a dam like this one overnight. The dam is about 30 feet across both banks and the water.

The Cow Bayou swing bridge on Texas 87 built in 1941 gave Bridge City its name. TxDOT was ready to tear it down for a more modern structure like the one next to it that takes traffic southbound. But Bridge City native Mark Dunn set out to save the bridge and now the Texas Historical Commission is proposing the bridge be listed on the National Register of Historic Sites. TxDOT is restoring the bridge and will even put on a new bridge-keeper shed.

Orange City Council Tuesday approved giving the last block left of Water Street, along with a portion of Moss Street, to the company for its expansion. Water Street, which went along the south bend of the Sabine River in the 1870s and 1880s was a spot for affluent homes, including the mansion of timber baron Henry Jacob Lutcher.

Anne Drummond, 34, of Beaumont, sobs into a paper towel after the SUV she was driving struck 8-year-old Kalen Thomas on Cambridge Ave. as he was walking home from Caldwood Elementary School Tuesday afternoon. Witnesses say Thomas darted into the street and that Drummond - who is believed to have been driving at or below the legal speed limit - did not have a chance to steer the vehicle away from the child. EPA wants to clamp down on emissions in Texas. Emissions that contribute to ozone pollution come from refineries and major petrochemical plants such as ExxonMobil and other motor fuels refineries in Southeast Texas and chemical plants that make synthetic rubber or chemicals used in making plastics. These emissions can combine with heat and sunlight to form ozone at ground level and is considered a pollutant that can harm people. That is why the EPA wants more control of these emissions.

The two convenience stores at the intersection of U.S. 69 and Wheeler Road have been at the heart of the back-and-forth tussle over alcohol sales in Lumberton. The overturned cars that were sitting in the parking lot after a tornado touched down. The tornado, seen by witnesses, also touched done at the Kohl's store across from the Walmart Tuesday afternoon. Both stores were damaged with some injuries reported.

An unoccupied exam room at Triangle Aids Network in Beaumont remains vacant because of cost cutting measures. Triangle Aids Network is contemplating shutting its doors for a week or two because of a lack of funding. To keep that from happening, the network is asking the county for an advance on their fiscal budget, which doesn't start until Oct. 1.
